1986

Every start is hard. So was for Waltari. The first years of the career were dominated by disappointments.

Waltari were founded in 1986 by Kärtsy Hatakka, Jariot Lehtinen and Sale Suomalainen because they were bored by the Helsinki club scene. The trigger was the possibilty to play at a gig in the Tikkurila Comprehensive School where Sale's mother worked.
So they started to rehearse with Tote Hatakka who played the bass but it did not work out and so Kärtsy took over although he did not have played any bass before. He did not even own his own bass why he had to play a borrowed bass upside down because he is left handed.
At their gig they performed as a trio. The songs played were "Liisteri-Mies" and "Nakki". This gig was the beginnig of Waltari. They started to perform many gigs in clubs. They played at least once a week somewhere and even a local magazine called Ilta Sanomat announced it on their frontpage.
But they did not really have success and were considered as "the worst band of the world".
