1991

1991 was a big bang for Waltari. Their first album Monk Punk was released by Stupido Twins. The positive response on the previously released single made the album possible. Monk Punk was a real low budget album but Waltari were satisfied with it and still Monk Punk is the best example how to make good music without lots of money. Monk Punk is more a punk album as a metal album, so there remain doubts if Waltari can already be called a metal band at that time. But they are also not an average punk band: they are a monk punk band.

"Good God" is released as a single. A video has been released in August.

Pekka Rahkonen acuquires as the proper manager. Pekka Rahkonen managing many Finnish bands was their manager until the year 2000.

1991 really was Waltari's lucky year. The release of the album could even be topped. Waltari made a journey to Berlin because they realized that there are not enough gigs in Finland for a fuzzy guitar band. They stayed for a week and found out that Finnish bands have a quite good reputation in Germany. After they returned home they heard that Angry Fish Music will be releasing Monk Punk in Germany. So Monk Punk was released in October 1991 in Germany and also whole Central Europe.

So they decided to return to Berlin for the winter and to play some gigs there. Pekka managed a gig at the Ecstasy Club in Berlin.
On that gig Waltari went on stage wearing robes and carrying clothes as shown on the band photos in the Monk Punk Booklet. Waltari were happy with the gig and it also was another big bang for Waltari: Backstage they were contacted by Gianna Possehl who worked for Roadrunner Records a major label for metal bands. She promised to persuade the company to sign Waltari.

Waltari did not take this offer seriously. So they were even more surprised when a Roadrunner fax arrived at Stupidos a week later. Waltari continued playing gigs in Berlin and mouth propaganda about a hot Finnish metal band spread. When they returned to Finland the deal with Roadrunner was almost fixed. But before it was finalized they agreed with Stupido Twins that they release another EP containing Finnish language material.

In 1991 Waltari achieved more than they could have imagined and achieved more than they did in the four years before.
