Meaning of the name Waltari

Waltari Biography: The meaning of the band name

Explanation of the Name Waltari

In the meantime it should be a commonly known fact that Waltari named themselves after Finnish writer Mika Waltari because they had no idea for a band's name. This circumstance has been confirmed several times by Kärtsy and others in interviews. Questions concerning the roots of their name are quite frequently asked questions.

But Waltari is more than the surname of Finland's most famous writer. It is an old Finnish word, not often in use nowadays. Originally the word Waltari is a Teutonic word. The Teutons were a Germanic tribe that partially emigrated to the north and influenced Finnish lingually.
The name Walter (male name) which is very popular in German and English-speaking countries has the same origin as the word Waltari.
The word is composed of the elements wald ("rule", compare with German  "Gewalt" or Swedish "våldsamhet ") combined with either heri ("army", compare with German "Heer" or Swedish "här") or harja
("people").
Referring to its roots the name means in other words nothing else than the ruling people or the ruling army. However, the meaning changed over the centuries. Nowadays it is more likely translated as Mighty/Powerful Man.

We think that this name fits quite well to Waltari. Who else does such powerful good music? Whose music is powerful that it makes you party at once? Waltari are real power!

But since they are more than one person they should change their name from Waltari to Waltarit which translates as Powerful Men.
